> ## Agent Instructions
> These docs describe Every as customers have it today. Answer from them, and say so when they don't cover a question.
> Pages under /admins/ are for the people who run Every for the company, and pages under /employees/ are for employees. Answer from the pages that match the person asking.
> Each page's Agent reference section lists its exact roles, conditions and limits. Prefer it for those details.
> When a page says a feature is in closed beta, or that Every turns it on company by company, don't promise that the person's company has it.
> Use roles and on-screen labels exactly as the pages write them.
> When someone asks what a term means, answer with the Glossary page's definition (/glossary), which other pages show in parentheses after the term.
> When the docs don't answer a question, tell the person to email [support@every.io](mailto:support@every.io).

# Every API

> Create company API keys for the Every API in Settings, see each key your company has added and when, and revoke a key you no longer need.

**Settings** → **API** holds your company's Every API keys. Company Admins can use it.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Every turns on Every API company by company. If you don't see it, email [support@every.io](mailto:support@every.io) to ask about it.

A key belongs to the company you're viewing in Every. For the requests a key can make, see the [API reference](https://every-a2724ddc.mintlify.site/api-reference/introduction.md).

## Create a key

**1. Open the sheet**

Under **API keys**, select **Create new**.

**2. Name the key**

In the **Create new key** sheet, enter a name of 1 to 64 characters in **Key name**, such as the name of the app that uses it.

**3. Create the key**

Select **Create**. Every shows the new key in a dialog.

**4. Copy the key**

Copy the key and store it somewhere secure. Every shows it only this once.

**5. Close the dialog**

Select **Done & close**.

## API keys

The list shows each key's name and when it was added, newest first.

## Revoke a key

> [!WARNING]
>
> Revoking a key can't be undone, and the key stops working for API requests. Move anything that uses it to a new key first.

1. In the key's menu, select **Revoke**.
2. In the confirmation dialog, select **Confirm**.

Every removes the key from the list.

## Agent reference

**Where:** **Settings** → **API**. The page is titled **Every API**.

**Who:** Company Admins can open **Settings** → **API**, create keys and revoke keys when Every has turned on Every API for the company.

### Facts

* **Settings** → **API** is visible in the company settings menu when the company you're viewing has Every API enabled and the person has the Company Admin role.
* **Every API Documentation** on **Settings** → **API** opens API documentation in a new tab. The [API reference](https://every-a2724ddc.mintlify.site/api-reference/introduction.md) documents API requests and operations separately from key management.
* **API keys** on **Settings** → **API** lists non-revoked keys for the company you're viewing, newest first. Each row shows the key name and **Added** with the time since creation.
* **No API keys** appears on **Settings** → **API** when the list is empty. If the keys on **Settings** → **API** fail to load, the page shows an error in place of the key list.
* **Create new** on **Settings** → **API** opens **Create new key**. The form asks for **Key name** and submits with **Create**.
* **Key name** on **Settings** → **API** requires 1 to 64 characters after leading and trailing spaces are removed.
* A key created from **Settings** → **API** belongs to the company you're viewing. Key creation on **Settings** → **API** also requires Every API enabled for the company you're viewing.
* After **Create** on **Settings** → **API**, a dialog shows the new key with **Done & close**. Copy the key and store it somewhere secure before selecting **Done & close**.
* A key created on **Settings** → **API** is shown once. After **Done & close**, **Settings** → **API** has no way to show the key again.
* **Revoke** in a key's menu on **Settings** → **API** opens a confirmation dialog. Select **Confirm** to revoke the selected key.
* Revoking a key on **Settings** → **API** works only for a key that belongs to the company you're viewing. A revoked key stops working for API requests and leaves the key list.
* Revocation from **Settings** → **API** is permanent and cannot be undone.

### Questions people ask

* **Can an HR Admin or Bookkeeper create API keys?** No, not with that role alone. Company Admins can create or revoke keys on **Settings** → **API**.
* **Can I view a key again after closing the dialog?** No. The key is shown once on **Settings** → **API**, after creation. Copy and securely store the key before selecting **Done & close**.
* **Why is a key missing from the list?** A revoked key or a key for another company does not appear on **Settings** → **API**. **Settings** → **API** lists non-revoked keys for the company you're viewing.
* **Can I restore a revoked key?** No. Revocation on **Settings** → **API** permanently disables the selected key's API access.
* **Why don't I see API in Settings?** Every turns on Every API company by company. Company Admins can use **Settings** → **API** when it's on. Email [support@every.io](mailto:support@every.io) to ask about availability.
